Evangelism & You

Going to Heaven?

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20).

If you awoke in the middle of the night and saw your neighbor's house in flames, what would you do? Would you go back to sleep? Or would you call the fire department and rush over to ensure that everyone escaped to safety?

If you discovered that you had just inherited a large estate on a beautiful tropical island, do you think that you would keep it to yourself or would you tell everyone about it?

    FLAMES OR PARADISE
Yet how many Christians see their neighbors on their way to the flames of hell and say nothing? How many of us are assured of an eternity in paradise and do not tell others that they may have the same assurance? Most Christians will agree that we should do more evangelism and may even feel some guilt about it, however many of us still do very little.

Jesus himself commanded us to tell others about him. So, it's not a question of whether or not we should evangelize, it's a question of how to evangelize.

    HOW DO I DO THIS?
There are many methods. Check out a Christian bookstore and you will find many good books on this subject. These are helpful because they often provide a basic method for presenting the gospel, some ways to present your testimony, and some ideas about handling objections. One excellent tool is a program called "Evangelism Explosion" by Dr. D. James Kennedy.

This is a great program built around two fundamental diagnostic questions:

    1. Have you come to the point in your spiritual life where you can say for sure that if you were to die today you would go to heaven?
    2. Suppose you were to die today and you stood before God and he said to you, "Why should I let you into my heaven?" what would you say?

Based upon the answers to these two questions, you would be in a position to take your presentation in the proper direction. An article on this site which offers a "glimpse into eternity" is based upon this simple method.

Another very good tool is Campus Crusade for Christ's "The Four Spiritual Laws." Easy-to-use booklets are available that allow you to present the gospel easily, clearly, and effectively.

    JUST DO IT!
No matter what method we use, it is imperative that all Christians realize that we are all missionaries. A church in South Florida reminded its members of this important fact by placing a large banner over the exit which read: "You are now entering the mission field."

The world in which we live is our mission field and we can have a profound effect upon that world. We can help change this world into a better place to live and assist others so that they may escape the flames of hell and share eternity in paradise with us.
